August 2019 DSHRM News Print

President's Report

DSHRM Membership and associated HR Professionals:

It is hard to believe we have reached August! With summer marching right along, so is the chapter. Since our June newsletter, the chapter hosted its July event with 43 individuals in attendance and the board has met to review comments received on the recommended bylaw changes. Moving the document forward for legal review is the next step prior to sending the revised document to SHRM national for review and approval.

As part of our ongoing goal to improve operations and delivery of services, we continue to review board roles and functional processes. Additionally, and something very exciting is our current focus on listening and understanding your needs! At the July 18th event, Conflict Management in the Workplace, those who attended had the opportunity to access a post-event survey and provide us with feedback and ideas for future topics. The board reviewed your comments at the July directors' meeting and we are working on plans to take action. A big thank you to Kelli Gadbois the chapter's VP Programs & Certification for establishing the event survey and leading the chapter to incorporate your voice into our future actions! Please plan to take advantage of this communication pathway each time you attend a future event.

In 2019, DuPage SHRM turns 40 years old and we are planning to celebrate the milestone at the September event. To do so we need to hear from you!

Please send a favorite memory and/or a picture of some past DSHRM/SHRM experience. In doing so, you will be entered into a prize drawing! When sending your picture/memory, please include the date/year of the event, a description, and if appropriate, the names of those in the image. All submissions should be sent to [email protected] by August 31, 2019.

A Note of Thanks: Please join me in thanking Sharon Merrill from North Central College for her prior service as the chapter's VP for Membership and President-Elect. Sharon stepped out of her board roles on July 2nd. She has been instrumental in helping our chapter grow from 77 members at the end of 2018 to our current membership count of 88. Though Sharon will continue to be a part of the chapter, we will miss her valuable contribution on the board. With this change one of our current board member's, Christine Bedalow, expressed interest in filling the membership director vacancy and on July 25th the board voted to place her in the role of VP for Membership.

We currently have a board opening!

If you are interested in serving as the chapter's Marketing and Social Media Director, please contact me or one of the seated directors at [email protected].

Thank you for being a part of the DuPage chapter of SHRM and I am excited about our future as we grow together!

Illinois:

Equal Pay Act of 2003 Amended: On July 31st, Governor Pritzker signed HB 834 into law as PA 101-177, effective September 29, 2019. This legislation is similar to legislation vetoed by former Governor Rauner. Thank you to Jay Dee F. Shattuck, CAE of Shattuck & Associates Consulting, Inc for the following summary of the new law.

Equal pay has been the law in Illinois since 2003. PayScale finds the pay disparity between men and women for the same job and qualifications is a 2 cent differential for every $1 earned by men. The Illinois Chamber supports efforts to eliminate the differential but argued that HB 834 was not a viable solution. With Governor Pritzker's signature of HB 834 into law, all Illinois employers face more regulation and greater risk of lawsuits with much higher financial awards. The Illinois Chamber opposed HB 834 as it diminished employer defenses and dramatically increased the value of litigation.

We supported SB 1707 that limited an employer's seeking and using prior pay history in a less intrusive and litigious manner. SB 1707 also provided an incentive to employers to review and address any pay deficiencies similar to Massachusetts law.

The Illinois Chamber urges employers to review their pay systems to assure compliance. The Illinois Chamber provides resources that can assist employers in complying with this new law and other new regulation recently enacted into law.
