President's Report

DSHRM Membership and Associates:

Since March, the DSHRM board of directors focused on reviewing the chapter’s business operations and visionary alignment with SHRM National and IL SHRM (SHRM Mission, Vision, and Purpose). One such effort is the review of the Chapter Bylaws.  May 31st marked the close of a 30-day review and comment period for members. The board will meet on June 27th to discuss all comments received and vote on the proposed changes. Proposed revisions will be submitted to SHRM for review. Please note the new bylaws will not be effective unless and until approved by the SHRM President/CEO or their designee.

At the May board meeting, Monica Guillory was appointed by unanimous vote to fill the Diversity & Inclusion Director position. Monica is currently employed by RR Donnelley in the role of Director, HR & Workplace Inclusion. She will serve in place of Alex Ahnert. Alex notified the board in early May that she would need to step-down from her newly accepted role. Alex previously served as the board Secretary and her contributions to the board will be missed. We wish her all the best and look forward to seeing her at future DSHRM chapter meetings and events.

Additionaly at the May board meeting, Shweta Virmani was unanimously appointed to serve in the director role of Webmaster. Shweta is the HR Manager at Nitor Infotech, Inc. The role of webmaster is a new board position and we look forward to the contributions of Shweta in this new role as she assists in meeting chapter goals.

Please join me in welcoming Monica and Shweta to the board!

Though we do not currently have a board opening, if you are interested in serving on the chapter board or volunteering to serve on a committee, please contact me at [email protected]

Legislative Update

Your quarterly Legislative Connection has joined the DSHRM Newsletter. Flash updates will continue to be used when timely notice is an issue, however going forward regular Legislative News will be shared here.

Illinois Legislation to watch:

Sexual Harassment: The final version of the sexual harassment legislation was filed as an amendment to SB 75. It provides extensive changes to limiting unilateral employment agreements for sexual harassment and employment discrimination related to NDAs and arbitration. The legislation requires disclosure by any employer of a final adverse administrative or final judicial ruling to the Illinois Department of Human Rights. And, all Illinois employers will be required annually to have all its employees trained regarding sexual harassment. More details will be forthcoming. The Illinois Chamber led the negotiations on behalf of employers and is neutral on the bill.

Cannabis: The House Judiciary Criminal Committee advanced HB 1438. Some of the strongest provision for workplace protections are in the legislation. Again, the Illinois Chamber was on point in negotiations.

Janus: Affecting Illinois’ public sector employers, House amendment 1 to SB 1784 essentially undermines the rights of public employees that were recently granted by the US Supreme Court Janus decision.
