President's Report

DSHRM Membership:

I want to take a moment to share some chapter news and changes. First and foremost please join me in thanking Mary McHugh for her devotion and service as DSHRM President. At our March 28, 2019 chapter board meeting, Mary provided her resignation from serving in this role. Though we hate to see her make this change, the board members extend our full support to her in this decision. Mary has served as board president since 2017 and has led the chapter in providing quality professional networking and development opportunities. I am personally thankful for her willingness to stay involved in the chapter by serving in the capacity of Past-President. She will be a valuable advisor to the board and chapter as we work through this transition and move into the future. Please take time to reach out to her individually either by email or when you see her at a future DSHRM event.

As a result of this change the appointment of two interim positions was necessary. On March 28, 2019, the DSHRM Board voted to appoint me as Interim President while continuing as Legislative Director; and Sharon Merrill, our current Vice President of Membership has added the duties of Interim President-Elect. We will both remain in these interim roles until new officers are seated.

The DSHRM chapter maintains the following board of director roles:

                President (two-year term)

President-Elect (serves as president, if the currently seat is unable to do so)

                Vice President of Membership

                Vice President of Programs

                Marketing/Social Media Director

                Diversity & Inclusion Director

                Legislative Director

                Hospitality Director

                Registration Director

                Certification Coordinator

Benefits of chapter board service include:

  • The chance to make an impact and assist in the growth of your chapter and the HR profession.
  • Participate in the strategic design of programming to offered to the general membership.
  • An opportunity to be recognized as a leader in the field of human resources (resume building).
  • Hours spent as a volunteer leader may be utilized toward HRCI or SHRM recertification (check the websites).
  • Waiver of DSHRM program meeting fees if you attend the board meeting prior to the event.
  • Opportunities to network at the state and national levels of SHRM with reduced conference registration fees at some events.
  • Access to leadership development opportunities that may also earn recertification credits.
  • When attending on behalf of or as a chapter representative, limited travel reimbursement options for attending volunteer related SHRM sponsored events.
  • Peer HR support through colleague relationship development.

Immediate needs: At the moment, we have two openings on the board to fill. We are looking for someone to serve as the board Secretary. In March, the board approved Alex Ahnert to fill the Diversity & Inclusion Director opening. Alex is acting as board Secretary until this position is filled. In addition, we are looking for a volunteer to serve in a new director position as Webmaster .

If you are interested in serving on the chapter board, please contact me at [email protected] I can provide details about the opportunities and we can discuss the nomination/appointment process.

Many exciting things are happening at the DSHRM Chapter.  In 2019, DSHRM is offering through its programming a total of 15 HRCI and 17 SHRM continuing education credits. In addition, our events provide attendees the opportunity to network and build relationships with other HR professionals. DSHRM, as an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), is one of the world’s largest associations of human resource professionals. As a member you are in a great spot to empower people and workplaces to build a world of work that works for all!

By way of reminder: Upcoming program events include: the May topic on HR fiduciary responsibilities; a workshop where you will have opportunity to speak with four data analytics subject matter experts; and a health and wellness fair sponsored by Connor & Gallagher, One Source.
