Discover Your Motivation
Why We Work the Way We Work and How to Do It Better

This presentation focuses on perspective as the core tool to approaching problems, conflicts, and employee engagement. Business management & strategy skills are addressed through the development of a mission statement that serves as a guide and inspiration for all leaders and employees to clarify their motivation, or why they work where they work. When organizations have a clear mission based around adding value to their teams, customers, and communities, employees are able to discover meaning and become more engaged in growing the organization and themselves.  David Horning provides a simple formula for developing a mission statement and enacting changes, similar to those of some of Forbes' top companies to work for, that can positively transform workplace culture.

Attendees will leave with simple self-assessment techniques and action steps that they can use to transform problems into solution opportunities, work into a meaningful mission to serve, and conflict with others into stronger relationships.

According to a Gallup poll, only 1 in 3 Americans is satisfied with work, yet we maintain the same perspective of work and expect to be fulfilled. How can we improve this statistic and make work more meaningful for ourselves and our teams? In an interactive presentation that is part TED Talk and part Saturday Night Live, you'll be challenged to ask, "How can I see problems as solution opportunities?" "What can I do to create meaning at work?" and "How can I create relationships from conflict?" The answers to these questions will inspire a perspective shift that can transform workplace culture, grow your business, and help your community thrive.

Objectives:

The audience will learn how to:

  1. Shift focus from problems to the opportunities present in every situation.
  2. Take a step back, assume personal accountability, and take control of creating solutions to obstacles.
  3. Develop a personal and organizational mission centered around service
  4. Use 3 ways to create empathy to build relationships out of conflicts
  5. Boost morale, creativity, and teamwork using the "Yes, and..." principle of improvisation

About the Presenter:

David Horning

With a degree in political science from the University of Akron, David Horning took the next logical step and moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy. In 2012, he studied sketch and improvisational comedy at Amy Poehler’s Upright Citizens’ Brigade, where he performed on stage multiple times. He performed his signature character comedy at clubs around the city, wrote and produced a number of video sketches, including one featured on the homepage of Will Ferrell’s humor website, Funny or Die. In August of 2014 he brought a group of writers and performers together to produce a live sketch comedy show called “Laundry Day,” featured at Carolines on Broadway in Times Square. After only two performances, the show was selected to help kick off the 2014 New York Comedy Festival, but life in the New York comedy scene wasn’t exactly as fulfilling as David hoped, tough it led him on his current path.

After being floored by the fact that only 32% of people are engaged at work, David decided to leave New York to set out on a mission inspiring happiness and engagement as a motivational speaker. Combining his skills in character comedy, his passion for positive psychology, and the ambition to make the world a happier place, David has put together speaking programs that have brought laughter, inspiration, and learning to service organizations, colleges, and businesses across the country. He has been a featured speaker at regional conferences in New York, Illinois, and Indiana, and at the Garden State SHRM Conference in 2016. David’s mission is to inspire in others the same excitement, happiness, and meaning that inspires him each day, so in addition to reaching more people through speaking, he continues to write and produce video sketches, his blog, The ‘H’ is for Horning, and his first book, Find the Funny: Create Comedy, Create Character(s), due later in 2017.
