The Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification process must be completed by all US employers to ensure their employees have authorization to work. The Form I-9 can be frustrating and daunting for HR professionals in an era of constantly changing immigration policies and laws. Many employers are unaware of mistakes that have resulted in fines for other companies. During this session, we will analyze proper I-9 completion, cover the most common mistakes employers make (and get fined for), review recent government guidance on self-audits, the new form, best practices, special considerations for E-Verify employers and resources available to HR professionals.

HR professionals with be able to apply the skills learned during this presentation to ensure compliance with I-9 laws and regulations on the hiring process, form completion, document retention, etc.


Presenter:  Esther Contreras, Partner, Masuda Funai

Esther Contreras helps employers with all aspects of immigration law, including Form I-9 and E-Verify compliance, and processing work visas and green cards for their employees. Her clients span a wide range of industries, including IT, manufacturing, financial services, health care, education, food and the arts.

Ms. Contreras holds degrees from Northwestern University and the University of Illinois College of Law, is admitted to practice in Illinois, and is active in the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Coalition of Women’s Initiatives in Law, Hispanic National Bar Association, and previously served as Vice-Chair of the Chicago Bar Association's Immigration Committee and on the University of Illinois Law Alumni Board.
